Has a cat been coming to visit you in your garden, on your balcony, or even on your window sill for some time now? If it doesn’t have a collar and doesn’t seem to belong to anyone, it’s probably a stray, lost or abandoned cat. And if you’re heartbroken at the thought that he might starve, here’s how to feed him!
What food to choose?
If you’ve never had a cat, it can be difficult to navigate the overwhelming choice of cat food. In any case, if the cat you have taken a liking to is hungry, he will certainly not be picky. But the food you give him should also not make him sick and put him in an even more difficult situation than the one he was in until now.
For this reason, it is better to avoid giving him anything. In reality, an adult cat can easily get by with a bowl of kibble once or twice a day (the quantities to give are written on each packet of kibble depending on the weight of the animal). Add to that a bowl of fresh water to change every day, and that’s it.
But if you really want to invest in feeding this poor stray cat, then you can also add a little wet food to your kibblethat is to say, cat food. On the other hand, be careful never to give him leftovers from your meals. In fact, you could unknowingly give him foods that are dangerous for cats and cause food poisoning.
Also, remember to always remove and throw away unfinished food. after 30 minutes (15 minutes in summer). This will avoid giving your new friend spoiled food, not to mention it will also prevent it from attracting other animals or insects.
Good to know : if the stray cat is a kitten or an elderly cat, be sure to choose suitable kibble and food. Indeed, a cat’s diet must be adapted to its age because it does not provide it with the same nutrients at each stage of its life. For example, kitten food is much richer.
Where to feed him?
It is necessary to define a space where to feed your stray cat. And for good reason, if you don’t want him to see you as his new master and take possession of your interior, it is important to set limits now. On the other hand, be careful, feeding a stray cat, even once, will encourage it to come back. You must therefore be aware of this before getting started.
If possible, choose a quiet place outside, sheltered from bad weather and far from possible waste areas (such as trash cans). Likewise, think about place your bowl high up so that your feline friend can eat in peace. In fact, cats tend to feel safer when they are higher up.
And if you ever want to adopt this cat left to its own devices, first of all think about take him to a vet to check that it is not chipped. Indeed, it may simply have gotten lost and left devastated owners behind. You never know.
Once this check is done, place his eating area away from his litter box and resting place. And above all, find out how to arrange your interior to make it happy!
